"Basta" is a contemporary tango written by Ana Sofia Stamponi and performed by La Empoderada Orquesta Atípica, an intersectional feminist tango collective founded in Buenos Aires in 2018, which now has around twenty musicians. is also the name of our new queer tango event in Paris. We want to break away from the idealized image of heteropatriarchal, hyper-sexualized/romanticized, and elitist tango, where discrimination of all kinds, as well as sexist and sexual violence and harassment, are commonplace.
One Sunday a month, in the late afternoon, Rosa Bonheur sur Seine provides us with a beautiful space—parquet flooring, sunset over the Pont Alexandre III and the Grand Palais, high-quality sound system—to practice our steps before kicking off their 100% queer weekly party at 8 p.m.
¡Basta! will therefore also be an opportunity for queer people who are regulars at the party to discover a joyful and inclusive tango, different from what they may have experienced through the audiovisual industry or even on the streets of Paris.
A resource stand on queer, open-role, feminist tango, as well as initiatives in other dances, will be set up at the entrance to the practice for dancers and customers interested in discovering tango. We invite organizers and teachers who wish to do so to send us their flyers so that we can display them.
Part of this space will also be dedicated to the prevention of sexist and sexual discrimination and violence, and the Rosa and ¡Basta! teams will be available to listen to any problems you may have in order to maintain a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
To allow everyone to participate and in line with the values of the venue, admission is free. However, we strongly encourage those who can to purchase a drink on site.
